Solo Guitar
John specializes in polyphonic solo guitar, or "fingerstyle"
guitar, where the basic approach is to apply classical guitar
techniques, especially right hand technique, to any style of
music. The
distinct voices played by the fingers on the right hand define
melody, harmony, rhythm, and counterpoint -- all of the
essential elements of a complete song played on solo guitar.
The approach is similar to that of a pianist but applied to and
modified for the guitar's attributes (six strings and ten
fingers). As a foundation for his solo guitar artistry, John
studied classical guitar and, more recently, studied privately
with polyphonic guitar virtuoso Jeff Linsky.
